A World seminar in Altamira will discuss conjectures and responses to Belo Monte problems

WE BUILD CONNECTIONS WITH ORGANIZATIONS AND COOPERATE WITH SMART PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD

Next week, from the 25th till the 27th of October, the world seminar “Territories, environment and development in the Amazon: the fight against mega hydroelectric projects in the Xingu Basin” will take place in Altamira. The meeting will analyze the conjectures surrounding the Belo Monte Dam and power plant and it will discuss possible answers to impacts and situations of risk imposed by the project.
Six hundred representatives of threatened populations are expected by the organizers – traditional fishing communities, riverside communities, small scale land cultivators, wildcat miners, agro villagers, and indigenous peoples. They come from the macro-region of Altamira and other localities of the Xingu Basin. Indigenous communities from all over Pará, as Belém, Santarém, Marabá and the South of Pará, as well as from Mato Grosso, Goiás and Tocantis will also join. Workers, through their unions, will arrive in caravans to the event.
According to the program of the world seminar, the first day will be reserved to conjectural debates (there will be two thematic panels: “The Impacts of Mega hydroelectric projects in the Amazon: the Belo Monte Dam and its consequences”, in the morning, and “Violations of the rights of Amazonian peoples: the Belo Monte Dam and its consequences”, in the afternoon). The 26th and 27th of October will be reserved for discussion groups and workshops, and a plenary session will close the event.
Interested individuals, that are not taking part in the caravans previously organized by grassroots movements, should fill out the registration form available at the following link: http://xingu-vivo.blogspot.com/2011/10/informacoes-gerais-sobre-o-seminario_16.html.
The participants will be lodged in collective rooms and gymnasiums that will be made available by the Prelazia do Xingu (Prelature of Xingu). Participants should bring their own hammocks, sleep bags or tents, as well as personal care items. It will be charged a registration fee of 15 Reais to cover for food and other organizational expenses. A Press Room with internet access will be available for journalists attending the event.
The seminar is being proposed by the organizations of the region the most affected by the Dam, as the fisher colonies of Altamira, Porto de Moz, Senador José Porfírio, the Association of Exporters of Ornamental Fish (Acepoat), the Association of the Pilots of River Boats (Apivoal), which were invited by The Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI), Pastoral Commission of the Land (CPT), Union movements (as Conlutas, Intersindical, Unidos para Lutar, among others), and NGOs such as Fase, The Forum of Eastern Amazon (Faor) and Unipop, articulated through the Metropolitan Committee of Xingu Vivo para Sempre, from Belém, supported by the Movement Xingu Vivo Para Sempre.
The organizers invite the international community to attend the event.
